Frequently asked questions.

  • Book coaching is a personalized and collaborative approach to help writers like you develop and complete your book projects. It offers the support and guidance to gain clarity on your goals, project, and the path towards completion. A book coach acts as a mentor, helping the writer overcome challenges, refining their writing skills, and staying motivated to achieve your writing objectives. Whether you have an idea for a story, are already in the writing process, or are even finished with a discovery draft, a book coach can help. Whether you seek accountability, encouragement, direction, guidance, narrative struggles, plot holes, a book coach is there to provide the support you need.

  • Every tool has a specific use, but a book coach can provide an entire toolkit — and instructions, directions, and support — where other, singular tools cannot. (Have we taken the word “tool” too far? Probably.)

At their core, a book coach, especially one with a background in developmental editing, can provide a huge number of unique advantages that other forms of writing support like writing groups, workshops, and courses might not offer.

Personalized Guidance: A book coach can provide one-on-one, tailored guidance that is specifically focused on your writing project. We can help you identify your strengths and areas for improvement, and provide customized strategies to enhance your writing skills.

Ongoing Accountability and Support: A book coach offers a higher level of accountability than larger groups or workshops. If you pay for something, and you have to get on a call or Zoom with you coach, you better believe you’re going to do the work. (I speak from experience. I had no idea I could crank out 2500+ words in a day until I began working with a book coach.) In addition, we offer continuous support throughout the writing process, from the early stages of brainstorming and outlining to the final stages of revision and marketing. This ongoing partnership can be especially valuable for maintaining consistency and momentum.

In-depth Feedback: While writing groups and workshops might provide feedback on occasion, a book coach offers more detailed and in-depth feedback on your work: whether it’s brainstorming, in outline form, in scenes, or a full manuscript. We can pinpoint specific issues in your writing and suggest concrete, actionable steps for improvement.

Craft and Technique Focus: Speaking of, book coaches — especially those with expertise in developmental editing — can provide an incredibly detailed analysis of your writing's craft and technique. We help you refine your plot structure, character development, pacing, and other crucial elements of storytelling — all of which elevates your work and brings your novel to another level.

Individualized Strategies: Every single person is different. So, doesn’t it stand to reason that every single person needs targeted support for them to have their best shot at this? Unlike standardized courses or workshops, a book coach develops strategies and exercises tailored to you, your unique writing style, and your overall goals.

Confidentiality and Privacy: Some writers prefer the confidentiality and privacy that comes with a one-on-one coaching relationship — and the contract that accompanies it — so they can openly discuss their ideas, concerns, and challenges without the looming presence of a larger group.

Flexible Schedule: A book coach can often offer more flexible scheduling options to accommodate your availability, compared to fixed workshop or course schedules. I work with a lot of writers who are also full-time: employees, parents, or care-givers. Our time slots are in the evenings or on weekends, as that flexibility is key for their success.

To recap: while writing groups, workshops, and courses have their own benefits, a book coach provides a more personalized, consistent, and intensive level of support, particularly in terms of individualized guidance, feedback, and ongoing assistance tailored to your specific writing projects and goals.

  • While I understand the desire for assurances such as these, I don't make guarantees…and I would be incredibly cautious of anyone who does. The publishing industry is highly competitive, and “success” is influenced by so many factors — most of which are out of my hands, like timing, luck, and market conditions. Because I can’t control external variables, my focus is and will always be on guiding you to produce your best work, supporting you throughout your writing journey, and helping to give you the absolute best shot at achieving your goals.
